What is a Doula?
A doula (pronounced doo-lah) is a woman trained and experienced in childbirth. She is a non-medical professional birth assistant who provides continuous emotional support and physical comfort measures to the laboring mother and her family. Each mother has different needs and desires for coping with labor/birth. Doula's use the power of touch, massage, and reassuring words to reduce stress and anxiety during labor. They also suggest different positions to help with comfort. The doula will join the laboring mother at home or the hospital. She will remain with her for the duration of her labor, delivery, and post partum and until mom, dad and baby are comfortable.
Partners may also find a doula's presence very comforting as well. A doula is there in addition to, not instead of the partner or other support person. Doula's are the invited guest to your baby's birth. Some partners are comfortable taking a very active role during labor and delivery. Others are only comfortable holding mom's hand, and that's ok, we will work with your personal comfort level. We will all work together to make this experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible! We want you to have the birth YOU desire, as YOU see it!
